Berlin (dpa / bb) - On the occasion of the International Roma Day, the district offices in Berlin-Neukölln and Mitte show solidarity.

In this context, the Roma flag was hoisted in front of the town halls in Neukölln and Tiergarten on Thursday.

"The fact that the Roma flag is waving in Berlin today shows how far the movement has come in the last 50 years," said Mariela Nikolova from the Amaro Foro association, which advocates equal rights for European Roma across Berlin.

The Sinti and Roma are still the largest European minority and are confronted with the most racist prejudices every day, emphasized Neukölln's District Mayor Martin Hikel (SPD).

Stephan von Dassel (Die Grünen), district mayor of Mitte, commemorated the genocide of the Nazis against the Sinti and Roma and drew a line to a more recent event: “Unfortunately, the present also shows how necessary it is to keep the memory alive : Several victims of the terrible racist attack in Hanau have a Roma background, some of them had lost relatives in Auschwitz. "

The World Roma Congress took place in London for the first time 50 years ago.

Representatives of the minorities from nine countries agreed on the self-designation Roma, an anthem and a common flag.

Since then, April 8th has been celebrated as World Roma Day.
