Alt Tellin / Stralsund (dpa) - After the fire in the Alt Tellin pig breeding facility (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), the public prosecutor's office is investigating suspicion of negligent arson.

That said the spokesman for the Stralsund judicial authority, Martin Cloppenburg, on Thursday the German press agency.

So far it looks like a technical cause.

The company has estimated the total damage, including production losses, to be around 40 million euros.

The approximately 10-year-old and controversial large facility with 18 stables was largely burned down on March 30th.

More than 55,000 pigs perished in the flames and smoke.

Details of the fire expert's investigations could not be given, said Cloppenburg.

Some employees were heard as witnesses.

So far there is no evidence that someone has gained unauthorized access.

But even an intentional arson cannot be completely ruled out at this stage.

A first interim result from the expert can be expected in a week at the earliest.

Currently, a specialist company is mainly disposing of the carcasses and it is being cleared, as a spokesman for the operator, Landwirtschaftliche Ferkelzucht Deutschland (LFD) Holding, said.

The left faction in the Schwerin state parliament wants to get the state parliament to deal with the case soon.

Animal welfare and environmental associations demanded that the operating license be revoked.

The LFD stated that the Alt Tellin facility had "always been operated in compliance with the legal framework and an existing fire protection ordinance".

At the end of February there was already a fire in a modern fattening facility in Kobrow (Ludwigslust-Parchim), where 3000 of 9000 pigs perished.

Here, too, the cause is still unclear, but an intentional act has been ruled out.
