Schwerin (dpa) - Like Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also securing access to the Russian corona vaccine Sputnik V before possible EU approval. As State Health Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) announced on Thursday in Schwerin, the state has opposed Russia an option for a million of these vaccine doses secured.

"We are currently still in a phase where there are still too few manufacturers that are largely dependent", Glawe justified the move.

"The costs are expected to amount to around ten million euros for the federal government," said the statement from Glawes Ministry.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also trying to go its own way to improve the speed and predictability of vaccinations.

«We are interested in long-term cooperation with Russia.

In addition, the country is examining whether companies based in the country could enable bottling or production, ”said Glawe.

In Bavaria, a company in the Swabian town of Illertissen is supposed to produce the Russian vaccine.

A corresponding letter of intent for production and import has been signed, it said.

After approval, the Free State will receive 2.5 million vaccine doses.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining the application for approval of Sputnik V in the EU.

In April, EMA experts are expected in Russia to assess the production and storage of the vaccine.

Russia released the drug in mid-August 2020 as the world's first corona vaccine for widespread use in the population.

In the meantime, data published in the medical press have certified the agent's high effectiveness.
