Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - After the general practitioners joined the company, the number of corona vaccinations in North Rhine-Westphalia rose by leaps and bounds.

According to the state government, more than 135,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia were vaccinated on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) described this on Twitter as a vaccination record in North Rhine-Westphalia.

"In North Rhine-Westphalia, on average, a person is vaccinated against the coronavirus every 0.6 seconds - that is a great contribution to the fight against the pandemic and an important step towards keeping the vaccination promise," said Laschet on Thursday in Düsseldorf.

At the same time, the NRW Prime Minister and CDU chief again campaigned for a nationwide approach and spoke of a “bridge” to the summer.

Now, clear, rapid measures must be taken to ensure that “we can go the way over the bridge to summer”, he explained.

The federal states and the federal government should react as closely as possible to the dire development in the intensive care units and continue to effectively contain the pandemic.

"Caution is advised so that we will soon have a new perspective with the successes in testing, in tracking and especially in vaccination," he emphasized.

Laschet had received rejection from the SPD-led federal states in particular for the attempt at a “bridge lockdown” up to a higher number of vaccinated people.

With the emergency brake, the countries would have a means of reacting to rising numbers, countered his critics.

Laschet announced on Wednesday that half of all residents of North Rhine-Westphalia should receive a first corona vaccination by the start of the summer holidays on July 5.

Nationwide, around 656,000 vaccine doses were administered on Wednesday - 290,000 more than the day before.

This emerges from the statistics of the Robert Koch Institute.

On Wednesday, vaccinations started in most of the federal states in the 35,000 participating general practitioners' practices.

So far, on no day had more than 367,000 corona vaccination doses been injected nationwide.

NRW was able to improve its position in a national comparison after the start of vaccination with general practitioners and is now in the national average of 13.8 percent.
