The United States has passed sanctions against Burma's state-owned company for the production of gems, an industry that is a source of one of the state's main revenues.

This was announced by the Department to the US Treasury, explaining that all the assets of the Gems Enterprise, which manages the mines and sells precious stones, will be blocked and any transaction with the company will be prohibited.

Meanwhile, the British Foreign Ministry said it had been informed by the Myanmar authorities of the end of the mandate of the ambassador to the United Kingdom, who was ousted from his representation by the military attaché last night.

"We must therefore accept the decision taken by the Burmese government regarding the functions of Kyaw Zwar Minn," the ministry said in a statement.



Kyaw Zwar Minn spent the night in a car after yesterday he was blocked outside the diplomatic headquarters, occupied by Burmese junta soldiers.

The diplomat previously called for the release of the deposed leader in the February 1 military coup and raised concerns about the nation's future.

One of the main Burmese actors, 24-year-old Paing Takhon, a supporter of anti-coup protests, was arrested today by the country's security forces: local media reported, according to which the junta is giving the hunt these days to over 100 celebrities who have lined up against the military.

The death toll since the start of the anti-coup protests in Burma yesterday touched 600: this was reported by the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (Aapp).

According to the non-profit organization for the defense of human rights based in Thailand, 12 people were killed on Wednesday, while another five who had lost their lives in recent days but had not been counted were added to the total: the new data bring the total number of victims to 598.
