Berlin (dpa) - Two days after separating from Zsolt Petry, Bundesliga soccer team Hertha BSC brought Ilja Hofstädt to the professional team as the new goalkeeping coach.

"We made a decision after our dream solution Gabor Kiraly didn't work," said Hertha's sports director Arne Friedrich at a digital press conference on Thursday.

For the last games, Hofstädt moved up from the U19 juniors.

Hertha released Petry on Tuesday after the 54-year-old had made homophobic and anti-migration statements in the Hungarian daily newspaper “Magyar Nemzet”.

Successor Hofstädt has been looking after Berlin's offspring since 2004 and has been the goalkeeping coach of the U national teams at the German Football Association (DFB) since 2015/2016.

Friedrich told him that the 48-year-old native of Berlin was only the “second option” after Kiraly.

According to Friedrich, who will become a goalkeeping coach after the season is open.

Hertha coach Pal Dardai was pleased that there was no penalty against Santiago Ascacibar from the DFB for allegedly insulting an opponent in the Berlin derby.

«He's a hardworking player.

Had he been missing, Marton Dardai or Niklas Stark or a U23 player would have had to move into midfield, as Lucas Tousart and Vladimir Darida are suspended, ”said Dardai.

He has to do without the injured Dedryck Boyata, Eduard Löwen and Luca Netz in the home game on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3.30 p.m. / Sky).
