Leer (dpa / lni) - The expansion of the fiber optic network in the city of Leer continued on Thursday.

The infrastructure project is to supply 2900 households and company locations with high-speed internet in the south-west of the city.

"This fiber optic expansion is another important step for the nationwide broadband development in the city of Leer," said Mayor Beatrix Kuhl (CDU).

The district of Leer and the municipalities belonging to the district have been investing in the expansion of the fiber optic infrastructure since 2018.

The project partner is Glasfaser Nordwest, a joint venture between Telekom Deutschland and EWE AG founded last year.

Overall, the companies want to connect up to 1.5 million households and businesses in the north-west to the fast fiber optic Internet and spend around two billion euros for this.

The broadband atlas published by the Federal Ministry of Transport for 2020 puts Lower Saxony in fifth place among the large states in terms of gigabit availability in households, behind Schleswig-Holstein, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
