Erfurt (dpa / th) - In the opinion of CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt, Thuringia should follow the example of Bavaria and conclude a preliminary contract for the purchase of the Russian corona vaccine Sputnik V.

The Free State must finally get rid of the red lantern with corona infections, said Voigt in Erfurt.

The state government should stop hesitating and immediately secure Sputnik vaccination doses.

After the start of vaccinations in the general practitioners' practices this week and the good organization of the vaccination centers, the capacities for the use of additional vaccination doses are given, said Voigt.

If only half of the almost 2,500 doctors in private practice throughout Thuringia were to administer 20 doses of vaccine each day, that would be 125,000 additional vaccinations per week.

Bavaria wants to secure millions of doses of the drug before a possible EU approval of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.

According to the State Chancellery, Bavaria wanted to sign a preliminary contract with a production company in Illertissen, Swabia.

It is about 2.5 million vaccine doses.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining the application for approval of Sputnik V in the EU.

In April, EMA experts are expected in Russia to assess the production and storage of the vaccine.

Russia released the drug in mid-August 2020 as the world's first corona vaccine for widespread use in the population.

In the meantime, data published in the medical press have certified the agent's high effectiveness.
