Oldenburg (dpa / lni) - The use and rental of cargo bikes is booming, especially in large cities in Lower Saxony.

Rental stations stretch from the coast to the Göttingen region.

In Braunschweig, for example, "Heinrich the Load Lion" is enjoying growing popularity, while in Buchholz a rickshaw with an electric drive has been supporting the "Heidschnucke" fleet since the end of last year.

With “Mathilde” and “Irmhilde”, Hildesheim offers, among other things, two cargo bikes for hire that are specially equipped for taking children with you thanks to the bench and baby seat.

One of the largest initiatives is located in the state capital: Far beyond the city limits, Hannovers “Hannah” can rent cargo bikes at 32 different locations.

Many cities like Oldenburg also create an additional incentive for citizens to buy such bicycles: As part of a grant, around 100,000 euros are available this year to support the purchase of cargo bicycles.

At the start of the program, the city administration was literally overrun with inquiries.

"The subsidy was already exhausted after a month," says city spokesman Stephan Onnen.

Almost 150 applications were received, most of them from families with children, but some businesses also took the opportunity to get financial support when buying cargo bikes.

An increase in the funding is now being discussed.
