With each new tension in the negotiations of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi returns to the tone of renewing accusations of the January 2011 revolution of causing the crisis that threatens the future of Egypt and its national security.

Whenever Sisi linked the revolution with the Renaissance Dam, opposition and activists on social media responded by accusing him of compromising Egypt's water rights and granting the Ethiopian dam the kiss of life, by signing the 2015 Agreement of Principles with Sudan and Ethiopia, which is the agreement that Addis Ababa adheres to today and rejects the Egyptian and Sudanese proposals. That violates it, according to the Ethiopian description.

The latest accusations made by Sisi against the January revolution were today, Wednesday, during the opening of the Center for the Issuance of Secure Documents, where he said that his concern over the waters of the Nile began in 2011, specifically on January 25, the day when the popular revolution that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak began After 30 years in power.

Al-Sisi usually links the January revolution to the Renaissance Dam, but the most clear accusation came in September 2019 during a youth conference, where he made it clear that had it not been for what happened in 2011 (meaning the January revolution), Ethiopia would not have built the Renaissance Dam.

During his speech today, Al-Sisi renewed his warning to Ethiopia against harming his country's rights in the waters of the Nile, saying, "I say to the Ethiopians, we do not want to reach the stage of compromising a water point for Egypt, because all options are open."

Al-Sisi's speech comes as a comment on the failure of the latest round of negotiations, which took place during the past days in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, as the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the negotiations had not made progress, and accused the Ethiopian side of procrastination.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had described those negotiations as the last chance to reach an agreement before the start of the second filling of the Renaissance Dam, scheduled for next summer.

Last week, Sisi escalated for the first time the threatening language regarding the Renaissance Dam crisis, when he said that the waters of the Nile are a red line and cannot be neglected, and that the attack on Egypt's water rights will create unstable conditions in the region and an unimaginable reaction.

The escalation of the Egyptian rhetoric coincides with the conclusion of joint air maneuvers between the Egyptian and Sudanese armies, which were carried out in the Sudanese territories in recent days, which observers considered a clear message on the possibilities of military intervention against the Renaissance Dam.

The threat of military escalation was supported by most Egyptians, in a unified position that has rarely occurred recently between supporters and opponents.

However, this support did not prevent the opponents from criticizing Al-Sisi's position on the January revolution and his continuous attempts to put it as the Grand Renaissance Dam crisis.

Tweeters said that the real reason is not the January Revolution but rather the principles agreement signed by Sisi in 2015 that gave life to the Renaissance Dam, as Addis Ababa gave the ability to finance the dam internationally, and Ethiopia sticks to it during the current negotiations and rejects accordingly the Egyptian and Sudanese proposals to involve international mediators, as well as It says it gives it the right to complete construction and store water without waiting for the results of the negotiations.

Others considered that the January revolution contributed to increasing Egypt's soft power internationally, and that could have been invested in pressure on Ethiopia.

In July 2020, during an interview with Al-Jazeera, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn revealed that the agreement to declare principles for the Renaissance Dam stipulated that the first filling of the dam would be in parallel with the construction, and that Egypt had concluded the agreement knowing this.

Al-Sisi's approach to negotiating with Ethiopia, his domination of opinion internally, and his suppression of all who disagree with him are the reason for the current crisis, not the January 25 revolution, as he claims today.

The silence of the people over Sisi's statements that the January revolution is the cause of the (Renaissance Dam) problem

is an approval and support for Sisi's negative stance,

which means a victory for Ethiopia in its intransigent stance.
