Rostock (dpa / mv) - The basketball players of the Rostock Seawolves and the handball players of the HC Empor Rostock forego their model projects at the weekend to play home games in front of spectators.

Because of the rising corona numbers and the considerations to work towards a tightened lockdown, it is "not a good signal to play games in front of spectators next weekend," said Empor managing director Stefan Güter on Wednesday.

Originally it was planned that the Seawolves would play their home game in the 2nd ProA league against Science City Jena on Saturday and the Empor handball players their promotion game to the 2nd Bundesliga against TuS Spenge on Sunday in front of 500 spectators in the Rostock town hall.

The Rostock health department had checked the safety and test concepts in advance and gave the green light for the hygiene concepts.

"The decision feels right, even if the extensive effort involved and the failure to take the first step in the right direction are frustrating," said Seawolves Managing Director André Jürgens after the rejection.

The model projects should take place on a different day.
