May 21, 2018 A criminal court in Smyrna, Turkey, sentenced 104 people to aggravated life imprisonment, found guilty of playing a role in the attempted coup in July 2016.



According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the convicts were part of a trial which saw 137 suspects, mostly high-ranking soldiers, defendants.

Among those convicted are former Air Force commander, General Hasan Huseyin Demirarasl, former Aegean Chief of Staff, General Mamdouh Hakbil, Rear Admiral Suleyman Manka and other senior military officers fired and arrested after the coup.     



Turkey accuses the network of Imam Fethullah Gulen of organizing the attempted coup in July 2016. According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, between 14 and 21 May 527 people were arrested throughout Turkey because they were accused to have links with Gulen.

In the aftermath of the attempted coup, over 107,000 people lost their jobs due to allegations of complicity with the failed coup, while at least 55,000 were arrested and 48,000 detained.
