The Greens want to announce on April 19 whether Annalena Baerbock or Robert Habeck should take over the candidacy for chancellor in the federal election on September 26.

The Green Board will submit its proposal on that day.

This was announced by the Greens managing director Michael Kellner to the state chairman and the party council on Wednesday in a letter that was available to the German press agency.

The final decision on the candidate for chancellor will be made at the Green Party Congress from June 11th to 13th.

The Greens want to join the 40-year-old Baerbock and 51-year-old Habeck as the top duo in the federal election campaign.

Nevertheless, there should be a candidate for chancellor for the first time in the history of the party.

It has long been clear that only the two party leaders are eligible.

The two have said several times that they want to clarify the question among themselves first.

According to a survey, Baerbock has outstripped its co-chair, Habeck.

In the “trend barometer” published on Wednesday by the Forsa Institute for RTL and n-tv, Baerbock was for the first time in the candidate preference of the respondents before Habeck.

Against a Union candidate Markus Söder (CSU) Baerbock would get 20 percent approval, Habeck 19 percent.

Against a candidate Armin Laschet (CDU) Baerbock would achieve 23 percent and Habeck 22 percent.

In Wednesday's “trend barometer” they came to 23 percent and were thus only slightly behind the CDU / CSU with 27 percent.

The SPD achieved 15 percent, the FDP and AfD each ten percent and the left seven percent.

Forsa interviewed 1,501 people from March 30 to April 1 for the survey.

According to the institute, the margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
