Garmisch-Partenkirchen (dpa / lby) - After a lost ski season in the Corona crisis, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn is gearing up for the next winter.

For 1.5 million euros, a lift is to be replaced and a ski tunnel built for more safety.

"Nothing is being developed new," said the Zugspitzbahn spokeswoman, Verena Altenhofen, on Tuesday about the measure in the Garmisch-Classic ski area.

The lift is a modernization.

With the 45 meter long tunnel and an equally long gallery under the ski path, a danger zone that has existed there for a long time will be defused.

The "Münchner Merkur" had reported about it first.

In February, the Zugspitzbahn canceled the ski season in the Garmisch Classic area due to the corona pandemic.

At the end of March, Germany's highest ski area on the Zugspitze itself came to an end.

As a result, the company lost around 25 million euros in sales.

In the valley, where it is part of local public transport, only the cogwheel railway brought marginal income.

Nevertheless, the decision was made to start building the tunnel in the summer: The ground at the point in question would be dug up anyway to lay new lines for huts, said Altenhofen.

The operators of the Zugspitzbahn are now hoping for the summer - and they are optimistic for the next winter.

They recently announced the planned date for the start of the 2021/2022 season: the first turns on the slopes on the Zugspitze should be possible on November 19.
