IMF warns of inequalities between countries that risk widening due to Covid

On the sidelines of the opening of the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund again raised its growth forecasts for the world economy on Tuesday, April 6.

In the lead, China and the United States, but the organization warns: inequalities between countries are likely to widen.

Countries that cannot afford immunization campaigns and support their economies could slide into poverty.

The IMF points to the case of the many countries whose resources depend on the export of raw materials or on tourism, a sector which sometimes largely irrigates local economies.

Certain States were already in very great budgetary difficulty, unable to face the crisis and to support their populations.

Some 95 million more people than expected slipped into extreme poverty in 2020 as a result of the crisis.

Advanced economies must support recovery in developing countries through their monetary policy.

The richest states, those of the G20 also meeting this week, should extend by a few months the moratorium on the debt of low-income countries, a moratorium decided last year at the same time.
