Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg is looking for new areas for photovoltaic systems.

As part of a study commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the state's economic development agency is currently investigating how great the potential is on roofs and open spaces for use for solar energy, said ministry spokeswoman Andrea Beyerlein.

The result should be available at the end of the year.

The idea of using opencast mining lakes in Lusatia for floating systems has already been presented to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The plan is still in its infancy, said the spokeswoman.

In Brandenburg there are almost 38,900 photovoltaic systems with an installed capacity of 3700 megawatts.

The state's goal in its energy strategy of around 3500 megawatts being generated with the help of photovoltaic systems by 2030 has thus already been achieved, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

With the installed capacity of all solar systems of around 4 gigawatts, according to figures from the ministry, 1 million private households could be supplied with electricity for a year.

One assumes an average annual consumption of 4000 kilowatt hours.

From the point of view of the Green parliamentary group, the expansion of solar systems on roofs and sealed surfaces should have priority.

If the country's energy strategy were to be revised, the targets for solar energy would have to be revised upwards significantly, said the group's energy policy spokesman, Clemens Rostock.

“But we also see the need to use unsealed areas,” said Rostock.

But this must be done in a controlled manner.

The Greens take seriously the concerns of farmers who fear that they will lose land as a result.

The argument for solar systems are possible new sources of income through energy generation.

Despite the discontinuation of subsidies from the Renewable Energy Act, investments are still being made in photovoltaic systems, the ministry announced.

The energy supplier EnBW built a solar park in Weesow-Willmersdorf (Barnim district) with an output of 187 megawatts.

The Alttrebbin and Gottesgabe solar parks (both districts of Märkisch-Oderland) with a total of around 300 megawatts are under construction on behalf of EnBW.

As part of the RENplus program of the State Investment Bank, investments can be funded - but not by private individuals.

As of the end of 2020, a total of around 7 million euros had been approved for 75 applications within the current funding period.

There is a funding program for storage systems in private households - due to the great demand, no applications are currently accepted.
