"Completely domestic development": what is the potential of the newest army vehicle "Typhoon-Air Defense"

The 4 × 4 armored army vehicle Typhoon-Air Defense will be the debutant of the Victory Day parade.

This sample will appear before the public as part of a mechanized column.

“The mechanized convoy also includes five types of armored vehicles of the increased security of the Typhoon family, and the Typhoon-Air Defense model will be held across Red Square for the first time,” the website of the Russian military department says.

The developers of Typhoon-Air Defense are Remdizel JSC (Naberezhnye Chelny) and Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol JSC (part of the Almaz-Antey concern).

The vehicle was designed on the basis of the Typhoon-VDV special-purpose armored vehicle.

To date, the sample has passed the stage of state tests and is now awaiting delivery to the troops.

The vehicle created for the Blue Berets was made according to the design of a carrying armored hull, which helped to reduce its weight, while retaining its protective properties with the use of Class 5 armor.

The Typhoon-VDV layout allows the vehicle to be equipped with a variety of equipment and weapons, including remotely controlled modules.

High cross-country ability and maneuverability

Typhoon-Air Defense is designed to transport units of the Ground Forces equipped with portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS) Igla and Verba.

Now soldiers are delivered to the firing lines in standard army trucks and armored personnel carriers.

Typhoon-Air Defense is based on the KamAZ-4386 (K-4386) chassis.

This platform has a 350 hp engine, a 200 l fuel tank, and a cruising range of 1200 km.

The chassis length is 6 m, the width is just over 2.5 m. The mass of the armored vehicle on the K-4386 can reach 13.5 tons, and the maximum speed is 130 km / h.

As reported in the materials of "Remdizel", the chassis is distinguished by high rates of cross-country ability and maneuverability on all types of roads, including in mountainous areas.

Thanks to the K-4386, the armored vehicle is able to overcome a ford with a depth of at least 1.5-1.75 m, a vertical obstacle with a height of at least 0.6 m and a ditch with a similar width.

Almost all the components from which the platform is assembled are Russian-made.

As the chief designer of "Remdiesel" Igor Zarakhovich stated earlier in an interview with RIA Novosti, the company is gradually replacing imported mechanisms.

“There are also positive examples - we found a Russian supplier of hydropneumatic suspensions, who agreed to develop such a system for the K-4386, which we previously purchased abroad, and it works no worse, and sometimes even more reliably, than the imported one,” Zarakhovich said.

Typhoon-Air Defense can accommodate five people: a driver-mechanic, a commander, a machine gunner and two anti-aircraft gunners.

On the roof of the combat vehicle there is a turret with a Kord heavy machine gun and two hatches: one for the machine gunner, the other for the anti-aircraft gunner.

Soldiers can fire at speeds up to 20 km / h.

The advantage of "Typhoon-Air Defense" is the ability to receive target designation from the outside - from a higher combat command post and the "Tor-M2" air defense system.

Thus, the military does not need to leave the vehicle.

The designers also took care of the safety of the crew.

"Typhoon-Air Defense" allows you to save the lives of servicemen after being hit by bullets, shrapnel from artillery ammunition, detonation under the bottom of 4 kg of explosives in TNT equivalent and 6 kg - under the wheel.

Development work on Typhoon-Air Defense should be completed in the third quarter of 2021.

Then it is planned to launch serial production of the machine.

Fanil Ziyatdinov, General Director of the Izhevsk enterprise Kupol, spoke about this in January 2021 in an interview with the National Defense magazine.

Recall that the first Typhoon-Air Defense sample was assembled in 2019 specifically for participation in the Clear Sky international competition, which was held in China.

The appearance of this car aroused genuine public interest.

The crew of the Russian combat vehicle overcame the route with 12 obstacles (figure eight, snake, anti-tank ditch, ford, slope, track bridge, sandy section, etc.) and successfully fired at simulators of air targets.

In August 2020, Typhoon-Air Defense took part in a dynamic display at the Ashuluk training ground (Astrakhan region) within the framework of the Army-2020 international military-technical forum.

The combat vehicle performed the tasks of repelling a massive missile and air strike of a potential enemy in conjunction with the calculations of the mobile anti-aircraft systems S-400, S-300V4, Buk-M3, Tor, Pantsir-S.

In October last year, Typhoon-Air Defense was involved in exercises to practice the conduct of echeloned air defense, which took place in the Astrakhan region at the Kapustin Yar training ground.

The crews of these vehicles successfully struck from the "Verba" MANPADS the conventional air attack weapons of the enemy, which were at a distance of up to 6 thousand meters and an altitude of 3.5 thousand meters.

The RF Ministry of Defense highly appreciates the capabilities of Typhoon-Air Defense.

As noted in the military department, the new armored car "will increase the mobility of air defense units, as well as increase their effectiveness in repelling enemy air targets."

In an interview with RT, the editor-in-chief of the Export Arms magazine, Andrei Frolov, called the main advantages of Typhoon-Air Defense the high security of the crew and the increased reaction rate of anti-aircraft gunners to emerging threats.

According to the expert, Typhoon-Air Defense, like other Remdizel armored vehicles, are one of the most protected families of army wheeled vehicles in their class.

In a commentary to RT, the founder of the Military Russia portal, Dmitry Kornev, also noted that the specialists of Remdizel did a good job of ensuring a high level of security and crew mobility.

“In general, the Typhoon family was created taking into account mine protection and the convenience of the location of military personnel.

This is a fairly large, protected vehicle, a completely domestic development, ”said Kornev.

In addition, the expert called Typhoon-Air Defense a fairly inexpensive vehicle compared to other types of armored vehicles.
