Stuttgart (AP) - Florian Kohfeldt did not want to quarrel for long.

“The distance below is stable.

We will be vigilant, continue our performance and not panic, ”said the Werder Bremen coach after the unfortunate 0: 1 (0: 0) defeat at VfB Stuttgart.

The lead over the relegation place of the Bundesliga is still a comfortable seven points with seven game days to go.

But the trend is down.

The late Ludwig Augustinsson own goal (81st minute) gave Werder their third defeat in a row.

And tricky tasks await.

The rescheduled DFB Cup quarter-finals at SSV Jahn Regensburg are already scheduled for Wednesday.

A win and the associated entry into the round of the last four would be a great success for Bremen - but an end in the fifth from bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga would be a big disappointment.

The league then continues against the heavyweights RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund - and then with the key game against FSV Mainz 05. Werder faces groundbreaking weeks.

"If we stay stable in the league and possibly reach the semi-finals in the cup, we have had an excellent season," emphasized Kohfeldt.

But it could also be another tremendous game with the intended relegation.

Last season the Bremen team only secured the relegation against 1. FC Heidenheim.

They currently have a whopping nine points more than at the same time last season.

Defender Ömer Toprak predicts that “it will be exciting until the end” and “we have to collect more points”.

In Stuttgart at least one would not have been undeserved.

Although Kohfeldt's protégés created goal danger almost exclusively through long-range shots in the absence of the suspended striker Joshua Sargent.

As far as courage and commitment are concerned, the guests' performance was quite decent.

That's why the coach would not have been “completely happy even with a draw,” as he said afterwards.

And that's why he also drew positive insights from the "most unnecessary defeat this season so far", as midfielder Maximilian Eggestein called the bitter 0: 1.

"We will continue and try again and again to offer such services," said Kohfeldt.

"Then we'll get the points we need to stay safely in the league."

In addition to Mainz, there is only one opponent from the lower half of the current table waiting on the penultimate matchday with FC Augsburg.

In addition, Eggestein is missing for Bremen on Saturday against Leipzig due to a yellow card suspension.

Despite all this, Kohfeldt does not seem particularly worried.

Not yet.
