Karlsbad (dpa / lsw) - A 55-year-old man is said to have seriously injured an acquaintance with a hot iron in his apartment in Karlsbad (Karlsruhe district).

He is now in custody.

As the police and public prosecutor's office in Karlsruhe announced on Sunday, the 66-year-old was visiting the accused on Saturday afternoon.

Alcohol was consumed.

After the visitor fell asleep, the host is said to have pressed a hot iron onto his bare skin on several parts of his body.

The victim fled the apartment - despite the serious injuries.

The drunk alleged perpetrator was arrested at his home.

The 66-year-old suffered second and third degree burns on his face, abdomen, arms and genitals.

He was put into an artificial coma by an emergency doctor and flown to a specialist burn clinic.

The suspect has been in custody since Sunday for attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm.

He had "at least accepted the possible fatal consequences of injury", it said.

Second-degree burns damage the epidermis and parts of the dermis.

The wound is very painful, takes a few weeks to heal, and sometimes surgery is required.

Third-degree burns destroy the skin in all layers.

The damage can also reach deeper and affect blood vessels, muscles or bones.

Surgical treatment is required.
