A robot is trained at MIT to capture hidden objects using radio waves, which is why it is called RF-Grasp.

"We are trying to give robots the advantages of humans," as the world of robotics continues to grow, said assistant professor at MIT Fadel Adeeb.

In an effort to take technology a step further, Adeeb and his team have developed a robot that can use his senses to find hidden objects.

RF Grasp, as it is called, was able to do so by using radio waves that are able to pass through walls.

Combining this radio frequency with conventional computer vision helps the RF Grasp robot find and capture hidden objects.

The team says its invention could one day revolutionize the world of e-commerce, as robots in warehouses could help find and pick up packages and things that are not easily noticeable.

The team plans to share its invention in May at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.

But how does a robot use radio waves to find things?

Radio frequency identification has been used for years in many areas, from locating pets with an implanted chip to finding a book deep within a huge library, and the system uses a combination of a symbol reader and a marker or symbol placed on the target.

"RF is a different sensing method than vision," said Alberto Rodriguez, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "It would be a mistake not to explore what radio frequencies can do."

In the case of RF Grasp, it uses both a camera and a radio frequency reader to locate and then seize an object.

It uses a robotic arm with a hand attached to it to hold things. A camera is located above the "wrist" of the robot, and a radio frequency reader is a separate device that sends tracking information to the robot's algorithm.

Thanks to these two complementary systems, RF Grasp is able to identify and understand hidden objects on its own.

The team is confident that the new robot will do well in the field of e-commerce, as well as help people in their homes find and collect hidden objects.
