Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - The "Fair Mobility" advice center of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) is concerned that the hygiene measures for harvest workers are not being followed consistently.

“Last year, helpers sat close together in the bus and were on the way to the field, without a mask,” said Oskar Brabanski from “Faire Mobility” in Nuremberg.

“Compliance is often not and often cannot be checked.

We do not assume any malice, but it urgently needs to be done more. "

The seasonal workers come mainly from the risk area Romania and the high incidence areas Poland and Romania.

After arriving at the farms, the helpers have to be put into work quarantine.

There they initially live and work in specific teams so that not all employees are absent in the event of infection.

"In particular, the group-related work quarantine is highly problematic, as the dependency on the farmer is increased," said Brabanski.

During this time, the workers are dependent on food from the company and cannot go to local supermarkets, as is usually the case.

"In the past year we had several cases in which the supply of food was inadequate, at the lowest level or at overpriced prices with substantial surcharges."

According to the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV) and the Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers (VSSE), the companies are making every effort to implement the strict requirements due to the corona pandemic.

Farmers have to invest in additional accommodation, masks, gloves and other hygiene measures for which, according to the farmers' association, there are no compensation payments.

According to the VSSE, a farmer had about 880 euros additional costs per seasonal worker last year due to the corona protective measures.
