Wiesbaden / Kiel (dpa / lno) - You were a postage stamp of the independence or the uprising of the Schleswig and Holstein people - depending on your point of view.

On April 24th, rare stamps from the years 1850/51 will be auctioned in Wiesbaden.

The auction house Heinrich Köhler announced that the starting bid for the “rebel brands” was 40,000 euros.

Due to their special history, the pieces were among the most exclusive classic German stamp issues of the 19th century.

The duchies of Schleswig and Holstein gained political independence from Denmark for a short time in the middle of the 19th century during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851).

In an effort to break away, the auction house announced that the company sought to introduce its own postage stamps.

The "Postschillinge" symbolized a strong symbol of independence for the population of the duchies.

From Denmark's point of view, however, the postage stamps stood for uprising and rebellion.

When the stamps were finally issued on November 15, 1850, Schleswig was already under Danish control again.

That is why the postal shillings came to the post office only in Holstein - which only lost its independence a few weeks later.

The Danes ended the sale of the brands with the Schleswig-Holstein coat of arms according to the information in March 1851.

The stamps are part of the 5th stamp auction of the collection of the former Tengelmann boss Erivan Haub.

The Haub collection has been auctioned since summer 2019.

The legendary Baden misprint - the highlight of the first auction - was auctioned for 1.26 million euros.

A letter with Lübeck's first postage stamp changed hands in November 2020 for 430,000 euros.

The starting bid for the letter was 80,000 euros.

Other brands also achieved prices of several hundred thousand euros.
