Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringian State Forestry Agency invested around 470,000 euros in the rehabilitation of fire ponds last year.

These are supposed to provide extinguishing water in the event of forest fires and thus support the fire brigades in their operations.

Thuringia Forest announced that 21 ponds were repaired last year.

For example, the ponds have been desludged, the dams have been sealed and the water intake points have been made functional.

So far, depending on the location, fire brigades have had to pump urgently needed extinguishing water over kilometers of hoses.

Work on the ponds would continue this year.

According to the information, the main areas of renovation are the forests in eastern and southern Thuringia, which are regularly affected by fire.

A total of 44 fire extinguishing ponds are in need of renovation in the forest owned by the State Forestry Agency as well as by private individuals and municipalities.

The access roads to the ponds would also have to be specially developed for the heavy and wide fire engines and in some cases provided with a turning facility.

According to its own information, the State Forestry Agency intends to invest a total of around 1.6 million euros in the rehabilitation of the fire-fighting ponds.

The money comes from the state government's action plan “Drought, storm and bark beetle” for the years 2019 to 2022. Thuringia Forest receives four million euros annually from it.
