Doctor Jarosław Górnicki runs a small clinic in Warsaw and actually specializes in pediatrics and allergy medicine.

But since emergency contraception became prescription in Poland, he has worked actively to give women access to emergency contraception before it is too late.

- Every hour counts when it comes to emergency contraceptive pills, but it is difficult to get a doctor's appointment quickly.

In Poland, doctors have the right to refuse prescription by referring to personal conviction.

- You may succeed in getting a doctor's appointment, pay, and then the doctor refuses to prescribe you by referring to so-called freedom of conscience.

Recipe for SEK 15

Jarosław Górnicki prescribes electronic prescriptions for just over SEK 10, which is one tenth of the price at private clinics.

He does not want the women to explain themselves and says that he would not even double check if the woman claims to be called Pippi Longstocking.

In the first years, it was about one recipe a day all over the country.

But when it formally became clear in January that Poland would further tighten its abortion ban, the number of requests increased to 900 in the first month.

Since then, he has printed out 500 recipes a month.

Over-the-counter in the EU

According to the ECEC network, which works to increase access to emergency contraceptive pills, it is possible to obtain the medicine without a prescription in the majority of EU member states.

Several countries joined after the European Medicines Agency stated in 2014 that one of the most common tablets, “EllaOne”, is safe to use without contact with a doctor.

Minister of Health compared with miscarriage

In Poland, "EllaOne" became over-the-counter in 2015, but the ruling National Conservative Law and Justice pushed for a change in the law in 2017. The then Minister of Health Konstanty Radziwiłł said that as a doctor he would use his right not to prescribe emergency contraceptive pills.

He also likened the effect of the drug in case of miscarriage - despite the fact that emergency contraceptive pills can only prevent ovulation.

Doctor Jarosław Górnicki plans to continue prescribing at cost price.

- I want to try to return to normal.

It is hypocrisy to claim that it is a dangerous drug that is harmful to women.
