Schwerin (dpa / mv) - An impending construction stop for the cruise ship Global 1 at the shipyard in Wismar has been averted for the time being, according to Economics Minister Harry Glawe (CDU).

The release of a further 35 million euros from the so-called lockbox of the Asian parent company Genting Hong Kong received the necessary approval in the consortium of 17 banks and loan guarantors.

One of the guarantors is the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

“This is an important message for the company, its employees and also the supplier companies of MV Werften.

The construction of the Global 1 will continue and further orders can be placed with supplier companies ”, Glawe announced on Thursday in Schwerin.

The security account pledged by Genting had already been opened in the past to bridge liquidity bottlenecks in the construction of the ships commissioned by Genting.

The renewed removal should secure the period that is necessary for a detailed examination of the restructuring report for MV Werften.

The report confirms the concept presented by Genting “as fundamentally feasible and viable,” explained Glawe.

It depends on the paper whether the federal government approves further aid from the economic stabilization fund to the shipyards.

The state government is already guaranteeing loans in the millions and is trying to bring the shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund under the protective umbrella of the federal government.

According to reports, additional loan support of up to 400 million euros is required to ensure its continued existence.

The multi-group Genting took over MV Werften in 2016 to build cruise ships for their own needs.

But with the corona-related interruption of cruise shipping at the beginning of 2020, one of the most important sources of income collapsed, with dramatic consequences for MV Werften.

Most of the 3,000 employees have been on short-time work for a year, 1,200 of them are threatened with dismissal.

The ship Global 1, which will be one of the largest cruise liners in the world with a length of around 340 meters and up to 9500 passengers, is awaiting completion in Wismar.
