Stamford (dpa) - Triggered by the corona pandemic, according to market researchers, significantly more laptop computers will be in use in the future than before.

This year, the number of notebooks used worldwide will rise from 796 million to 866 million, forecast the analysis firm Gartner.

For 2022, the market researchers expect a further increase to 929 million devices.

It's about more than just replacing existing desktop computers with mobile computers.

The number of desktops used is falling - but not as quickly as additional notebooks are added.

This year, the number of desktop computers will drop from 522 to 495 million and in 2022 to 470 million, according to Gartner's forecast.

With working and learning from home since the beginning of the Corona crisis, many more people than before have needed computers, said Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal.

And the realization that many previous working models were out of date will further boost demand for laptops.

At the same time, the desktop PC is far from over: In some areas - for example, if there is a higher power requirement - they will continue to be used.

There are also regional differences: desktop computers, for example, are more in demand in China and Germany than in other countries.
