Berlin / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In the past two and a half years in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, almost 8,000 young families have fulfilled their dream of owning their own home with the help of Baukindergeld.

The state contributes 12,000 euros per child over a period of ten years.

According to data from the responsible development bank KfW, a total of 154 million euros have been approved for families in the northeast.

This corresponds to 2.3 percent of the previously approved funding amount of 7 billion euros.

A total of 9.9 billion euros are available in the funding program.

Applications that must be submitted within six months of moving in can, according to the information, be submitted for the last time on December 31, 2023 - but only if the contracts were signed by the end of March 2021 or the construction was approved by then.

The Baukindergeld, which is linked to income limits, is considered to be one of the most expensive projects of the grand coalition in the legislative period that is coming to an end.

According to KfW, 330,000 families across Germany have received a commitment since the start of 2018.

According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, no further extension of the program is planned.

Critics see government subsidies as a driver of real estate prices.
