Mülheim / Ruhr (dpa / lnw) - The busy Ruhr area motorway 40 was closed on Thursday evening near Mülheim for five days in the direction of Essen.

The closure has so far gone according to plan, confirmed Peter Belusa from the motorway administration in the evening.

In the next few months, Deutsche Bahn will build two bridges there for train traffic over the motorway.

In a serious tanker accident in mid-September 2020, the bridges were badly damaged and later demolished.

The lock will initially last until April 6th.

Further closures will follow according to the plans on the holidays over Ascension Day and Pentecost as well as in the summer holidays.

As of August 13, the replacement bridges should be installed with heavy equipment, as the railway announced.

In the accident on September 17, 2020, a tanker truck driver with 35,000 liters of fuel came off the road.

The truck had caught fire below the bridges.

In December one of the bridges had already been replaced by a makeshift bridge, for which the motorway had to be temporarily closed.

Overall, the railway puts the accident damage at a mid double-digit million amount.
