Rostock (dpa / mv) - Student representatives from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have warned of an opening debate for universities in the state.

"We demand that the teaching is held exclusively online for the entire summer semester, provided that it is not about events that must necessarily take place in attendance," says an open letter to Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) and members of the state government and of the state parliament.

The letter was published on Wednesday.

A digital semester, digital exams without audiovisual monitoring as well as a renewed extension of the standard period of study are necessary in connection with a state-wide examination free trial regulation in order to guarantee the study feasibility and the financing of the studies in the long term also in the digital semester.

"Despite a renewed wave of infections with rapidly increasing numbers of infections and several significantly more contagious mutations of the virus, which are currently spreading worldwide, the Ministry of Education would now like to discuss opening strategies for the summer semester," it said.

"In our opinion, however, an opening debate is out of place in the current situation."

Classroom teaching would be another “hotspot” that would encourage infection, according to the students.

The letter comes from student bodies at the University of Rostock, the University of Greifswald, the University of Wismar, the University of Neubrandenburg and the University of Music and Theater Rostock.
