Stavenhagen / Schwerin (dpa) - Regardless of the Corona restrictions, Low German friends in northeast Germany are again looking for the "most beautiful Low German word".

Proposals in three categories for the 2021 competition should be received by the Stavenhagener Fritz Reuter Literature Museum (Mecklenburg Lake District) or the home association of the state by May 3, both institutions announced on Wednesday.

In addition to the “most beautiful Plattdütschen Wurt”, the “best Utdruck” (best expression) and the “leiwste Redensort” (favorite expression) are chosen.

The best expression must be a new creation.

A jury is formed by representatives of the MV home association and the museum.

The winners are to be announced on May 30th in the Rostock Botanical Garden, where the Low German Week begins, which should last until June 6th.

The competition has met with great interest among friends of Low German for years.

In the previous year, 200 suggestions were received from twelve federal states.

At that time, the “Snutdauk” (for example: Schnutentuch) for “face mask or mouth and nose covering” had won as a new creation.

For the “Low German word”, “Ballerdutje” was chosen for a “smacking kiss”.

"The most beautiful expression" became "Ut ein Schwientroch was not a violin" (A pig trough does not turn into a violin).

Other winners were “utklamüsern” (find out or research), “Ankiekbook” for Facebook, “Ackerschnacker” (mobile phone), “Bankenmalür” (financial crisis) or “Lämmerhüppen” (discotheque).
