Hanover (dpa / lni) - In order to implement the “Lower Saxony Way” for more biodiversity, Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) is pushing for changes to the federal government's planned legislative package on insect protection.

Although this contains good regulations, decisive points of criticism still have to be dispelled, said Lies, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Environment on Wednesday.

"Without these changes, Lower Saxony will not approve the resolutions pending in the Federal Council."

The compromise that was sealed by the state government in Hanover with the approval of all parliamentary groups in November, which guarantees farmers compensation payments for more environmental protection, is referred to as the “Lower Saxony Way”.

But the Plant Protection Application Ordinance, which is part of the legislative package, is not yet acceptable from the Environment Minister's point of view.

"It is imperative for our contract that the ordinance gives the federal states options for their own regulations or for compensation options," said Lies, referring to the "Lower Saxony Way" project.

However, this has not yet happened to a sufficient extent.

Together with Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast (CDU), Lies wrote to the Federal Ministers for Environment and Agriculture and pointed out the necessary additions from the point of view of the Lower Saxony state government.

"We do not want less nature conservation, but we want to make a fair balance," emphasized Lies.
