Barcelona (dpa) - Google is the next important exhibitor to refrain from participating in the Mobile World Congress, which is scheduled for the end of June.

The decision was made in view of the internal Corona travel restrictions, said a spokesman for the Internet group of the Axios portal.

The network equipment suppliers Ericsson and Nokia had previously announced that they would be staying away from the world's largest industry meeting in Barcelona this year.

The mobile operator association GSMA as the organizer has so far stuck to the plan of bringing together 45,000 to 50,000 participants in Barcelona.

This would make the Mobile World Congress the first major international event since the beginning of the pandemic.

Last February, the MWC was among the first events to be canceled due to corona risks.

The GSMA's security concept for the trade fair in Barcelona includes quick test stations, additional entrances and exits in the exhibition halls, improved ventilation systems and a mask requirement.

Students should also download an app that can be used for contact tracking.

At Google, meanwhile, the first employees should be able to return to the offices in the next few weeks, as Axios reported, citing an email to the employees.

But this will initially be voluntary.

Facebook had previously announced that around a tenth of its employees could return to the headquarters in Silicon Valley at the beginning of May.

Tech companies were among the first to shut down a year ago.

They assume that in the future many more of their employees will work from home than before.

In some companies, such as Twitter, being in the office is entirely voluntary.
