Dresden (dpa) - Despite ongoing corona restrictions, the mood in large parts of the East German economy has improved.

According to the Ifo Institute in Dresden on Wednesday, many companies assess their situation better than in the months before and are also more optimistic about the future.

The so-called business climate index climbed to 94.9 in March, from 91.0 in February.

The index was thus also higher than a year ago.

Industrial companies recently rated their ongoing business much better than in the previous month.

"At the same time, they also raised their outlook for the next six months in March significantly," said the economic researchers.

Industry is less affected by the lockdown measures than service providers and retailers.

But even in these areas, according to the information, a significantly better mood is emerging.

"The surveyed service companies raised their assessments of the situation as well as their expectations extremely strongly."

The Ifo business climate for East Germany is based on around 1700 monthly reports from companies in various industries.

The Ifo index is a leading indicator for the economy.
