Mülheim (dpa / lnw) - The heavily frequented Ruhrgebietsautobahn 40 will be blocked from today (10 p.m.) near Mülheim in the direction of Essen.

In the next few months, Deutsche Bahn will build two auxiliary bridges over the motorway for rail traffic.

In a serious tanker accident in mid-September 2020, the bridges were badly damaged and later demolished.

The lock will initially last until April 6th.

The road in the opposite direction to Venlo remains open.

Further closures will follow according to the plans on the holidays over Ascension Day and Pentecost as well as in the summer holidays.

As of August 13, the replacement bridges should be installed with heavy equipment, as the railway announced.

According to the plans, they should go into operation on September 6th.

In the accident on September 17, 2020, a tanker truck driver carrying 35,000 liters of fuel went off the lane at a sensitive point on the A 40.

Five railway bridges cross the motorway at the scene of the accident.

The tanker had caught fire below the bridges.

According to experts, the fire, which was around 1000 degrees Celsius, damaged three bridges so badly that they had to be torn down.

In December one of the bridges had already been replaced by a makeshift bridge, for which the motorway had to be temporarily closed.

Overall, the railway puts the accident damage at a mid double-digit million amount.
