Nuremberg (dpa) - For the first time, harvest workers from Georgia are used to harvest asparagus and strawberries in Germany.

Up to 5000 men and women from the former Soviet republic are to be deployed in the next few weeks on the basis of a mediation agreement between the Georgian authorities and the Federal Agency for Labor in fields, especially in Baden-Württemberg and Brandenburg, the Federal Agency said in response to a dpa request .

According to the Association of East German Asparagus Growers, more than 80,000 Georgians had applied for jobs in German fields.

That is more than two percent of the Georgian population.

The number of 5000 could also be increased if necessary, said a spokesman for the federal agency.

The asparagus farmers would have to pay the statutory minimum wage, costs for travel to and from the hotel should not be offset against this.

Georgians need a visa for work stays.

The asparagus farmers in Germany had major problems with the harvest last year because the urgently needed harvest helpers, for example from Poland and Romania, could not come in the course of the first corona lockdown.

Although numerous volunteers, including students, had signed up for the heavy field work, part of the harvest had to be canceled.

In Berlin and Brandenburg alone, the asparagus yield fell by 17 percent.
