Potsdam (dpa / bb) - With the settlement of the Tesla factory in Grünheide (Oder-Spree), up to 11,600 employees could move to Berlin and Brandenburg in the first stage of expansion.

In a possible final stage of 40,000 employees at the US electric car manufacturer, a total of 36,400 workers are expected.

The Brandenburg Ministry of Infrastructure named these numbers on Tuesday when it presented a concept for the development of the Tesla environment.

The concept was developed by the joint state planning department Berlin-Brandenburg.

This included 22 cities and municipalities in Brandenburg, the Oder-Spree district and the Treptow-Köpenick district in Berlin.

With a view to the influx of people in the area around the Tesla factory, 3,000 potential areas for residential construction and 286 for commercial use were identified.

For the creation of new living space, more than 900 hectares of building space could be available in the short to medium term, it said.

This could then create over 40,000 additional apartments.

From summer 2021 on, Tesla plans to build up to 500,000 electric cars per year in Grünheide near Berlin, initially with around 12,000 employees.

Because the environmental approval for the factory by the country is pending, Tesla is building in steps and through early approvals.

A point in time for the final decision on a possible approval is open.

Conservationists and residents fear negative consequences for the environment with the car factory.

Tesla boss Elon Musk also wants to build the world's largest battery factory on the site.
