Dresden (dpa / sn) - Under certain conditions, insured persons can ask their health insurance company to provide them with a real hair wig, if this is the most cost-effective option in the long term.

The Dresden Social Court informed about a corresponding decision on Monday.

The specific case concerned a woman suffering from complete hair loss (alopecia totalis).

She had opted for a human hair wig for years, while the cash register only reimbursed the price for a cheaper synthetic hair wig, it said.

The cash register claimed that synthetic hair was sufficient and, above all, did not differ from real hair at first glance.

The court came to a different view and gave economic reasons.

The chosen human hair wigs could be used significantly longer before they become unsightly and have to be replaced.

In the case of the plaintiff, the real hair wig was almost 50 percent more expensive, but it also lasted twice as long.

The Dresden Social Court pointed out that it did not position itself among the far more common cases of temporary hairlessness in women, for example as a result of chemotherapy.

Here, the social courts would represent different views.

Affected women should contact their health insurance company before purchasing a wig.
