Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The construction companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can again hope for more orders from residential construction.

As the statistical office announced on Monday in Schwerin, the construction of 6,724 apartments across the country was approved in 2020.

That was 7.2 percent more than the year before.

There were approvals for 3228 apartments in multi-family houses as well as for 2479 single-family and 314 two-family houses.

In addition to apartments in dormitories and previous non-residential buildings, there were almost 600 apartments in existing houses.

Rostock in particular contributed to the increase in building permits.

According to the office, the construction of 1,394 apartments was approved there, an increase of 25.5 percent.

The Hanseatic city is one of the municipalities in the state with the highest demand for living space.

In Schwerin, on the other hand, the number of building permits fell by almost 4 percent to 494. The statistics office recorded an increase of almost 4 percent for the six districts.

Low interest rates and government subsidy programs to create affordable housing are considered the reasons for the construction boom.

At just under 1.8 billion euros, the construction industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania achieved a similarly high sales volume in 2020 as in the previous year.

But while commercial construction and state-financed projects recorded slight growth, residential construction fell by a good 6 percent to a total of 493 million euros.

In the case of incoming orders, however, an increase of almost 18 percent was registered.

The building association of the state has high hopes for the public sector, which triggered 28 percent more orders.

Information from companies with more than 20 employees was included in the statistics of the association.

Many construction companies employ fewer people.
