Berlin (dpa) - According to Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD), Berlin would not shut itself off from having more powers for the federal government in combating the corona pandemic.

He did not understand the corresponding statements by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) as a threat, said Müller on Monday evening in the ZDF “heute journal”.

"If she is of the opinion that this is a good measure nationwide, then I say: please, go ahead."

There are constitutional lawyers who have been saying for months that the federal government has the means to do so.

"Of course, Berlin will then also join in," added Müller.

The chairman of the Prime Minister's Conference reacted snuffily to Merkel's criticism of the corona management of several federal states, including Berlin, on Sunday evening in the ARD program "Anne Will".

"I am also a little annoyed that the Chancellery is now using appropriate wording to give the impression that some are dealing with the situation very seriously and prudently and others are not," said Müller.

It is about “balancing out the possibilities and the very different situations” in the federal states.

“It's not like everyone does what they want,” emphasized the SPD politician.

It is not wise to practice such "country bashing".

"We're in the same boat," Müller made clear.

The federal and state governments have achieved a lot together.

Berlin wants to get the corona pandemic under control with a dual strategy.

Cautious easing in trade and culture, for example, remains.

They are supplemented by stricter rules, especially for testing and the mask requirement.

Müller defended this path and also pointed out that Berlin goes beyond the nationwide rules when it comes to the home office obligation.
