Weiterstadt (dpa / lhe) - Many people wait year after year for the noble vegetables: the asparagus season is about to start in Hesse.

"We are ten days later than last year," said the chairman of the Asparagus Working Group in South Hesse, Rolf Meinhardt, after the frosty temperatures in the first half of March.

"We'll have asparagus at Easter, but not much."

Meinhardt estimates the price for the first domestic asparagus at 17 euros a kilo.

Despite the corona pandemic, he is more optimistic with the harvest workers this year.

"You could plan it, I know that I will get my people," said Meinhardt.

He has the promise of 140 helpers.

The official start of the season is planned for April 8th.

According to the Hessian farmers' association, there are 120 asparagus farmers across the country whose cultivation area is larger than half a hectare.

In 2020, asparagus could also be cut on 1671 hectares.

The total harvest in the country was 8,500 tons, two years earlier it was 10,900.
