Marburg (dpa / lhe) - The runoff election for the post of Lord Mayor of Marburg was narrowly won by incumbent Thomas Spies (SPD).

He received 50.20 percent of the vote on Sunday, asserting himself against the challenger Nadine Bernshausen from the Greens.

The Social Democrats are entering their second term in office.

57 925 citizens of the central Hessian university town were entitled to vote, the turnout was 42.50 percent.

Spies has been mayor there since 2015.

A total of nine candidates entered the race for mayor's office.

In the first ballot on March 14th, Spies got 33.9 percent of the vote, Bernshausen got around 26.0 percent.
