Hanover (dpa / lni) - The third corona wave is also building up in Lower Saxony.

On Sunday, the number of new infections in the northwest remained at a high level.

The Ministry of Social Affairs in Hanover announced that a total of 1442 confirmed infections with the coronavirus had been reported to the State Health Office by the morning - slightly fewer than the 1573 new infections reported the previous day, but significantly more than the Sunday a week ago when 1196 new cases were reported were.

The seven-day incidence rose to an average of 118 per 100,000 inhabitants, after 114 on Saturday.

An incidence value of over 100 is now recorded in 23 of the 45 districts and urban districts in Lower Saxony.

In many places, this could mean that the most recent easing will be reversed.

In four areas, the important measure had even exceeded the 200 mark by Sunday.

These were the cities of Salzgitter (215.7) and Osnabrück (200.9), the district of Cloppenburg (202.1) and - newly added - the district of Emsland (211.7).

Three other people died in connection with a corona infection.

The total number in Lower Saxony is now 4810.
