Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - As a sign of climate protection, the lights went out in dozens of places in Baden-Württemberg on Saturday or were not switched on at all.

In Stuttgart, for example, the lighting at the art museum on Schlossplatz and at the television tower was switched off.

Churches, fountains, the old castle and the state museum in the state capital should also remain dark.

In Karlsruhe, the lights should go out on the Turmberg, the Natural History Museum and the municipal utilities, among others.

According to the organizers, more than 140 south-west municipalities wanted to take part in the “Earth Hour” climate protection campaign, including not only large cities but also many smaller municipalities in various districts.

With the "Earth Hour", the environmental foundation WWF wants to draw attention to the threats posed by climate change.

Around the globe, the lights are to be switched off for an hour.

A good six months before the general election, the campaign should be understood as a demand on politics, said a WWF spokesman.

The idea for “Earth Hour” first came up 14 years ago in Australia.
