Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - Lights out to save the planet: More than 100 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia took part in the global climate protection campaign "Earth Hour".

As a signal for more environmental and climate protection, numerous town halls, churches, monuments and company headquarters switched off the lights for an hour.

Countless private households also took part.

It also got dark in football stadiums such as the arenas in Mönchengladbach and Schalke, at industrial monuments such as the Duisburg Landscape Park or other brightly illuminated landmarks such as the Duisburg sculpture “Tiger & Turtle”.

In the metropolis of Cologne, the lights went out on the cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge, among other places.

The idea for “Earth Hour” was born 14 years ago in Australia by the environmental foundation WWF.

Today, according to the foundation, the hour without lights is the largest environmental protection campaign in the world.

The light-off campaign could be a sign of the energy transition, more climate justice and a future without a climate crisis.

More than 500 cities across Germany are participating.
