Berlin (dpa / bb) - Also this year, the lights on the Brandenburg Gate should go out during the "Earth Hour".

At 8:30 p.m. sharp, the lighting will be switched off for several minutes as a sign of environmental and climate protection, as the environmental organization WWF announced.

Four large screens on Pariser Platz were supposed to show images of destroyed ecosystems before the lights went out and the images were replaced by images of intact seas and healthy forests.

The "Earth Hour" is being announced for the 15th time by the WWF.

It is intended to point out the waste of resources and is observed in thousands of cities around the globe.

Because of the corona pandemic, the environmental organization has refrained from public events for the second year in a row.

Instead, she calls for people to turn off the lights in their own homes and post pictures of them on social media.
