Schönefeld (dpa) - In the main terminal of the new BER Airport, more passengers are expected than ever before with the start of the holidays this weekend.

According to the operator, it will only be around 15,000 per day, a fraction of what was common in Berlin before the Corona crisis.

The airport opened in October.

As the airport company announced on Friday, flights to and from Mallorca in particular are leading to increasing numbers of passengers.

In mid-March, 30 flights to the island were expected during the Easter holidays.

Then Mallorca lost its status as a risk area.

"Now the airlines have reacted to the increased demand and are offering just over a hundred flights."

From Tuesday onwards, there is a general compulsory corona test for flights to Germany.

Even now, travelers who come from “high-incidence areas” with a particularly high number of infections and areas with new virus variants must present a negative test before departure.

"Safe flying will probably take years that passengers can either be tested before departure or upon arrival or have to show a vaccination certificate," said airport boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup.

The test offer in the terminal has been well received.

The summer flight schedule begins on this Sunday with the clock change.

Unlike usual, however, there are not many offers.

Additional connections to Ukraine, Turkey and Greece are planned in the coming months.

The companies Iberia, El Al, Cyprus Airways, LOT, Condor, SkyUp, Sunexpress and Aegean Airlines, among others, are planning more flights.

In 2019 there were almost 36 million passengers at Tegel and Schönefeld airports.

This year there have been around 500,000 so far. "Without Corona, the upcoming summer flight schedule would have shown how well BER is being accepted after almost six months of operation," said Lütke Daldrup.

"The current situation is deeply marked by general uncertainty."
