The Japanese government announced on the 18th of this month that the import volume of American beef from April last year to the 10th of this month exceeded the standard set by the Japan-US trade agreement, so it is a safeguard to protect domestic producers. And raised the tariff from 25.8% to 38.5%.



Under the Japan-US Trade Agreement, the US and Japanese governments are supposed to start discussions on future measures within 10 days of the invocation, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced on the 25th that it had held the first discussion with the US government online. did.



Executives from the Cabinet Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will attend on the Japanese side, and executives from the Office of the United States Trade Representative will attend on the American side to share information on the activation of safeguards and continue discussions in accordance with the agreement. It means that I confirmed it.



The quantity that is the standard for activating safeguards is 247,000 tons in 2021, which is 5,000 tons more than in 2020, and then gradually increases until 2033.



In the future, discussions will be held on whether this quantity is appropriate, and the discussions will be completed by June.
