Osnabrück (dpa / lni) - The Greens in Lower Saxony's state parliament have asked the state government to put in place an exit strategy for pig farmers.

According to a motion for a resolution, support should be given to farmers who want to stop pig farming or who want to keep fewer animals better.

"We are concerned with reducing the number of pigs, not reducing the number of farms," said the agricultural policy spokeswoman for the Greens parliamentary group, Miriam Staudte, of the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (Friday).

She spoke of an "unprecedented structural break" in pig farming, which affects small farms in particular.

According to the State Office for Statistics, there were 6500 pig farms in Lower Saxony in March 2020, as the newspaper reported.

Ten years earlier it was more than 10,000. Due to corona outbreaks in slaughterhouses, the number of slaughters had meanwhile been massively reduced.

The pigs piled up in the stables.

At the same time, meat and piglet prices had slumped dramatically.

Staudte therefore think it makes sense to enable farmers to abandon intensive pig farming.

According to the report, the justification for this is stated in the application: "This can only be achieved through targeted funding that is linked to the maintenance of the farms and encourages the switch to agricultural alternatives."

Staudte also emphasized that pork consumption in Germany is falling significantly.
