Berlin / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Due to the sharp rise in the number of corona infections, the federal government will classify France as a high-incidence area with mandatory testing upon entry from Sunday.

Anyone entering from these areas must have a negative corona test with them upon entry.

"In addition to the cross-border commuters from Rhineland-Palatinate and the cross-border commuters from France, who regularly return to their place of residence at least once a week, there are exceptions for people who can show a valid reason," said State Secretary Heike Raab after the decision in Mainz.

These included personal occasions such as visiting direct relatives, spouses and life partners, and shared custody of children of separated parents.

"The same applies if a border crossing is absolutely necessary for the purpose of vocational training or training."

These groups would have to show a negative rapid test twice a week, but did not need a PCR test.

If there is no test available when entering Rhineland-Palatinate, this must be done immediately at a test center or at the company.

The Moselle border region had already been classified as a virus variant area at the beginning of March.

There is already a compulsory test upon entry.

The stricter regulations on the virus variant area remained, but with relief, said Raab.

Cross-border commuters and caregivers who bring children and young people to school would only have to register once a week when registering digitally.

«We have long been living in a common living space in this border area.

That is why exceptions to the border regime are important for commuters, ”said Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD).

They should enable people to go about their daily life smoothly.

"It is important to us that we contain the infection process and still keep the borders open."

The classification as a high incidence area is in no way directed against the partners in France, but against the virus.

"We are all intensifying our vaccination activities along the border so that we can reduce the restrictions again as quickly as possible."
