Wiesbaden (dpa) - They are small and fast and sometimes a bit dangerous: in 224 accidents with e-scooters there were injuries in Baden-Württemberg last year.

48 people were seriously injured, 189 suffered minor injuries, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday in Wiesbaden, citing preliminary figures from the police.

The accident caused serious property damage nine times, and alcohol was involved in seven accidents.

Nationwide, the police registered a total of 2,155 accidents with e-scooters in 2020, in which people were injured or killed.

A total of 5 people were killed, 386 were seriously injured and 1907 were slightly injured.

Looking at the nationwide figures, in almost three out of four accidents (around 72 percent) the driver of the scooter was to blame for the accident.

According to the information, it was particularly frequent driving accidents in which the driver lost control of the e-scooter without others contributing.

With 18.3 percent the most common cause was alcohol consumption.

In addition, the drivers often used the lane or sidewalks improperly or were traveling too fast.

Overall, however, e-scooters still play a comparatively minor role when it comes to accidents.

In 2020, for example, the police in Baden-Württemberg registered 10,940 accidents involving bicycles.
